Celebrating Utah Archives Month 2026: Discovering “Home in the Archives”

It’s our favorite time of the year at the Department of Government Operations: Utah Archives Month kicks off today!

Supported by libraries, museums, special collections, and archival institutions across the state, this month-long event shines a spotlight on Utah’s rich history and the dedicated staff who keep it accessible.

2026 Theme: Home in the Archives

The Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board has designated the 2026 Utah Archives Month theme for this October as “Home in the Archives.” 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States, making it the perfect moment to reflect on what “home” really means and how those stories are preserved in archives. Home can be a house or a hometown, a person or a journey, and it often lives in photographs, letters, postcards, scrapbooks, and other collections. It can be something built, something left behind, or something carried forward, and October is your chance to show how your archives tell these stories.

Through countless preserved photographs, historic maps, diaries, state government records, oral histories, and family papers, archival records tell the stories of where we live, how our communities have evolved, and what makes Utah feel like home.

Get Involved This October

Throughout October, archival repositories across Utah will host events, webinars, and special exhibits centered on the Home in the Archives theme.

Whether you’re a seasoned researcher, a local history enthusiast, or simply curious about the history of your own house or town, there’s no better time to dive into Utah’s rich record collections.
